10 Patriotic Books for Kids

My boys’ library rivals one of a kindergarten classroom. As a former special education teacher (teaching a range of ages 3-college), I accumulated numerous books over the years. While I love going to the library, I still constantly buy new books for our boys to read and enjoy. It has been extremely important to me to teach my children a love of literature. For each holiday, we have a set of books (although Carl and Jack both love to read their Christmas books throughout the rest of the year). In honor of Memorial Day, I have put together a list of ten patriotic books.

In addition to teaching our boys a love of books, we are trying to instill in them pride for their country. We want them to be aware of how our government works, our history as a country, and the people that have made our country what it is today. While I love picture books, it’s also important for children to read nonfictional books. In life, being able to understand and analyze nonfiction text, is imperative. By choosing an interesting topic (such as the United States of America), it’s possible to keep children engaged and excited about reading nonfiction.

For today’s books, I am linking directly from Amazon. As you know, I am a huge Amazon supporter (I’m one of those girls whose husband should be wearing that shirt that says, “If my wife was a transformer, she’d be Amazon Prime”). Amazon typically has the best price on children’s books around which is why I prefer to shop there.

10 Patriotic Books for Kids

Good Night, America by Adam Gamble

Good Night, Maryland, is one of our family’s favorite books. It’s perfect for even the youngest readers (I would say about one year old and up). In the Good Night, America, the book says “Good night” to numerous famous American landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Mississippi River, and amber waves of grain. These books are simple and a quick read before nap or bedtime.

This Little President: A Presidential Primer by Joan Holub

Learn about America’s presidential history with a bright and colorful board book. Ten Presidents are highlighted (and a list of all of the Presidents are listed at the end). Children learn facts about the Presidency, the White House, and facts about the featured Presidents. This book can be used for children two and up. Written for children ages two and up.

Parade Colors (First Celebrations) by Barbara Barbieri McGrath

This book is perfect for even the youngest readers. It’s geared towards babies specifically. Barabara Barbieri McGrath introduces little ones to symbols and celebrations of America including parades and the American flag.

The Fourth of July Story by Alice Dalgielesh

If you want your children to learn how the country was born, then this beautifully illustrated book is for you. Dalgielesh takes you back in time to the first independence day. This story is written for children four and up (best for children ages 6-8).

Red, White, and Boom by Lee Wardlaw

Red, White, and Boom, engages children with her rhyming poetic story about the fourth of July. Parades, picnics, the beach, and more are featured as Wardlaw shares the various events that people participate in or around the Fourth of July. This is a great way to introduce the activities so little ones before they attend the events.

Corduroy’s Fourth of July by Don Freeman

Corduroy is a beloved character in our house. My boys will listen to any story that features him. By using a familiar character, Freeman is able to keep his readers entertain and excited to find out what Corduroy does next for his Fourth of July celebration.

The Story of America’s Birthday by Patricia A. Pingry

Pigry has developed the series “The Story of” to explain topics such as holidays and famous people. We have a few of her books and my children love them. They read the Christmas one still even though it’s May. In the Story of America’s Birthday, Pigry describes Americas Birthday to children.

L is for Liberty (Reading Railroad) by Wendy Cheyette Lewison

The Statue of Liberty has long been a symbol of America. In L is for Liberty, children read about the State of Liberty’s history. This book teaches patriotism while engaging children with bright and coloring pages and simple text.

She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the … by Chelsea Clinton

While it may seem to you that this book is beneficial for girls to read, I also feel that it is important for my boys to read about strong women. In She Persisted, Clinton shares the stories of famous women that changed the world through their dedication, hard work, and persistence.

Land of the Pilgrims Pride: Ellis Discovers the 13 Colonies by Susan Arciero

Gingrich has created a series of stories following an elephant, Ellis through various historical events. If I am being honest, I solely chose this book based on the fact that it starred an elephant (my oldest, Carl, loves them). The adorable elephant on the cover has led us to discover her full series of interesting, historical stories.
