How to Use the xTool M1 Ultra Embossing Tool Including Foil Transfer

Embossing adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any project – learn how to use the xTool M1 Ultra embossing tool (also called the foil transfer tip) with this full tutorial. I’ll share multiple projects using the embossing tool on it’s own and also in combination with the other xTool M1 Ultra tools.

The embossing tool has two different functions. First, it can create raised designs that stand out and make a statement. Second, and in my opinion more stunning, the embossing tool can be used for foil transfer. You’ll hear this tool being referred to both the embossing tool and the foil transfer tip since it has two functions.

Whether you’re crafting decorative cards, personalized bookmarks, stunning gift tags, scrapbooking, or another fun project the xTool M1 Ultra’s embossing tool will add extra dimension to your designs.

Basic Steps for Using the Embossing Tool (Foil Transfer Tip)

This is the simple process for using the foil transfer tip on the M1 Ultra.

  1. Load your material: Place your blue sticky mat into the machine. Place your material on the blue sticky mat securely (pat down/rub to ensure the mat has adhered to the project material).
  2. If using foil transfer, secure your foil paper in place. For the foil transfer to transfer, you’ll need it to be tight and smooth on the project surface. Washi tape or painters tape will help secure the foil in place.
  3. Load your foil transfer tip. See directions above.
  4. Use the snapshot preview or marking. To be able to plan out your design, you’ll need to have an idea of the amount of design space you have available. Use the snapshot preview or marking to create a template for your working area.
  5. Design your project: In the xTool Creative Space, design your project. Choose the shape and size, and add any text or single line designs you want to draw.
  6. Select the foil transfer tip: On the right-hand side panel, select the Foil Transfer Tip module. If creating a project with more than one tool, select the multi-module tool option.
  7. Select the material. In the same panel, select the material you’ll be using with the tool.
  8. Select the settings for each layer of the design. Click on each layer or grouping of layers of your design and select the foil transfer tip tool option. Next, change the settings based on your material. You can use the pre-loaded xTool settings for your material or use your own custom settings.
  9. Process the design: Click the green process button in the bottom right corner.
  10. Finish Up: Remove your design from the mat.

What is the Maximum Processing Area of the Foil Transfer Tip?

The embossing tool uses the sticky mat on the baseplate. This means the maximum space you can use the rotary tool with is up to 300 mm by 300 mm.

What Type of Material Can the Foil Transfer Tip Work With?

The xTool M1 Ultra foil transfer tip can transfer foil to paper, cardboard, leather, and more.

When using the tool for embossing, the material must be thin. The maximum material thickness is 3 mm when using the baseplate.

I have not tested removing the baseplate/using the honey comb for thicker materials but it may be possible.

Single Line Designs are a Must for the Foil Transfer Tip

When working with the embossing/foil transfer tip tool, it will only cut single line designs like an outline. This means you need to think about your design – single line designs work best.

Can I Purchase Replacement Foil Tips?

Yes! Instead of paying for the whole housing of the foil tip, you can purchase a pack of 3 foil tips, each with a different thickness.

Conclusion

Just like the other xTool M1 Ultra tools, the foil transfer tip provides even more crafting opportunities. The embossing tool/foil transfer tip can add an extra layer of dimension and detail to your projects. This laser craft machine continues to bring the creativity and versatility.
